LAMH (Local Assistance for Maternal Health)
Background
The objectives of the Local Assistance for Maternal Health* (LAMH) pilot projects are to reduce maternal morbidity and mortality overall and among racial/ethnic groups in California through replicable quality improvement pilot projects. The LAMH pilot projects have been designed to strengthen partnerships among Local Health Jurisdictions (County Public Health Departments) as well as other organizations and groups, such as hospitals, provider groups, the Regional Perinatal Programs of California (RPPC), community leaders, and the California Department of Public Health Maternal Child and Adolescent Health Program. All Local Health Jurisdictions in California were invited to submit a proposal and those whose projects were funded is listed below.
Priority Funding Topics - Working with Local Providers To:
- Improve prevention of, recognition of, and response to obstetrical hemorrhage
- Improve accuracy and usefulness of administrative data
- Reduce fragmentation of maternity care
- Inform and educate the public and families about maternal issues related to reducing morbidity and mortality
Local Health Jurisdictions Who Received Funding:
- Los Angeles Reducing Maternal Hemorrhage: A Multi-Tiered Approach
The LA project will reduce the risk of maternal hemorrhage for approximately 47,000 women delivering in 10 Los Angeles County hospitals by focusing on prevention, recognition, and response to obstetrical hemorrhage, with particular emphasis on African-American women. - San Bernardino Maternal Morbidity and Mortality Education on Labor Induction Project (MMMELIP)
The San Bernardino project will educate clinicians, pregnant women and community members on the risks of non-medically indicated induction. San Bernardino County Project Coordinator: Jennifer Baptiste-Smith, MPA
- San Diego Woman-Carried Prenatal Record Cards
The San Diego project will develop, implement and track the use of a woman-held prenatal record card for women in county clinics and hospitals. San Diego County Project Coordinator: Amethyst Cureg, MD
- Ventura County Healthy Interconception Project (VCHIP)
The Ventura project will identify women diagnosed with gestational diabetes, hypertension and depression in pregnancy and enroll them for follow up case management from birth to one year postpartum. Ventura County Project Coordinator: Megan Steffy, MSN, PHN
