Dr. Mitchell is a Public Health Medical Officer working in Maternal, Child, and Adolescent Health in the Center for Family Health of the California Department of Public Health. She is board certified in Emergency Medicine and transitioned to public health after a 20 year career in academic medicine with a focus on family violence. During that time she was the Director of Domestic Violence Education for a state legislated program to improve the health response to victims of violence; she wrote California’s clinical guidelines on domestic violence; and she chaired a 3-year State Leadership Team on Health and Domestic Violence that led to numerous improvements in victim access to services. Dr. Mitchell served as Chair of the AMA National Advisory Council on Violence and Abuse and is on the Advisory Board of the National Health Resource Center. She also continues to teach medical and MPH students at the University of California, Davis. She hopes her experience in health policy will contribute to current efforts to improve maternal health in California.
