Sheila E. Cohen, MB, ChB, FRCA, obtained her medical degree (MB, ChB) from the University of Manchester, England and completed her anesthesia residency at the Westminster Hospital in London. She came to Stanford in 1973 as an Assistant Professor of Anesthesia, and in 1986 became Professor of Anesthesia. Dr. Cohen developed and was Chief of the Division of Obstetric Anesthesia at Stanford and has been active nationally and internationally in that field. She has served as President of the Society for Obstetric Anesthesia and Perinatology, and as Chair of the Committee on Obstetric Anesthesia of the American Society of Anesthesiologists. She was also a member of the Committee on Obstetrics: Maternal-Fetal Medicine for the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, and was a board examiner for the American Board of Anesthesiologists. Her research, teaching, and publications have focused on pain relief during childbirth and on promoting maternal safety in the peripartum period. She became Professor of Anesthesia, Emerita, in September 2006, but continues her teaching and clinical work part time at Stanford (at Lucile Packard Children's Hospital).
Examining the stories of mothers who die during pregnancy will help identify factors contributing to these deaths, and allow us to focus educational efforts on the topics most likely to improve maternal and newborn outcomes.
