Lawrence (Larry) A. Newman, MD, FACOG, is the current Clinical Perinatal Director, Early Start Program, Regional Maternal Substance Abuse Program at Kaiser Foundation Hospital in Oakland, California. Dr. Newman also is an Assistant Clinical Professor at the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of California School of Medicine at San Francisco, California. Dr. Newman received his Bachelors of Arts from Rutgers-The State University and his medical degree from the Universidad Autonoma de Guadalajara, Mexico. Then returning to the United States, he completed a Rotating Internship at St. Josephs Hospital and Medical Center, New Jersey College of Medicine in Paterson, New Jersey. After completing 2 more years residency in Internal Medicine, he then completed a 4 year residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology at Monmouth Medical Center, Long Branch, New Jersey. Subsequently, Dr. Newman completed his fellowship in Maternal-Fetal Medicine at Denver General Hospital at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center in Denver, Colorado and it was then when his appointment at Kaiser Permanente began in 1983.
It is essential for us first to analyze adverse maternal and neonatal outcomes that occur anywhere in California, and then try to make recommendations or system changes to prevent them from ever happening again.
