Genetics Home Reference is  is a service of the U.S. National Library of Medicine, part of the National Institutes of Health, an agency of the Department of Health and Human Servicess.  This web site is for consumer information about genetic conditions and the genes or chromosomes related to those conditions.

At this site you can

  • Read Condition Summaries describing  the major features of the condition, the condition's genetic basis, and explains its pattern of inheritance.
  • Find links to support organizations for each condition.
  • Read Gene Summaries providing the official name and symbol of a gene, its chromosomal location, an explanation of its normal function, and the health implications of variations in the gene.
  • Read Chromosome Summaries providing an estimate of the amount of DNA and number of genes for each chromosome and for mitochondrial DNA.
