Adjunct Clinical Professor, Ob/Gyn, ACOG District IX Patient Safety Officer; Stanford University Medical School

Photo John S. Wachtel, M.D., F.A.C.O.G., is currently a Clinical Professor in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Stanford University Medical School where he has practiced his entire career.  He has been in the private practice of general obstetrics and gynecology since completing his residency.  He has a long term interest in quality assurance, quality improvement and patient safety.  Dr. Wachtel is currently the chairman of the ACOG Patient Safety and Quality Improvement Committee and is also the Program Director for the ACOG Voluntary Review of Quality of Care (VRQC) program.  He currently serves as the Patient Safety officer for ACOG District 9 and serves on the District 9 Advisory Council.  For many years he has served as an expert medical reviewer for the Medical Board of California.  Dr. Wachtel is also the co-chair of the Stanford Hospital Gynecology Quality Assurance Committee and the co-chair of the Lucille Packard Children’s Hospital Obstetric Quality of Care committee since 2001.

Following his undergraduate studies at Stanford University graduating with honors and distinction, Dr. Wachtel attended medical school at the University of California at San Diego.  He then returned to Stanford Hospital where he completed his residency training in Obstetrics and Gynecology.

I hope to contribute to the outstanding work started by Dr. Main and Debra Bingham and to assist in collaboration with the patient safety movement within ACOG, both within California and nationally.
