Preeclampsia Task Force

Objectives

The overall goals and objectives of the CMQCC Preclampsia Task Force are to:

  • Define standard terminology of hypertension in pregnancy utilizing NIH, AHA, and ACOG classification guidelines
  • Conduct a literature review and develop best practice guidelines and recommendations based on key issues identified through the PAMR analysis of preeclampsia cases
  • Develop a preeclampsia toolkit to educate providers across the care continuum (prenatal through postpartum), including different practice settings, i.e. outpatient clinics and the emergency department, with best practice strategies to improve the quality of care and reduce morbidity and mortality
  • Design process and outcome measures to evaluate and analyze the impact of a standardized approach to preeclampsia recognition, diagnosis and management.

Preeclampsia is one of the leading causes of Maternal Mortality and one with a high level of preventability.  Quality improvement opportunities were identified through the CA-PAMR case reviews that naturally lead to teaching points and items for a toolkit.   Issues that the task force will focus on will be: 1) missed and under diagnosis of preeclampsia; 2) the role of triggers; 3) under-use and misuse of hypertensive medications; and 4) special issues for the Emergency Department.  Further topics will be identified during task force meetings and through further PAMR analyses.
