Ms. Shields, PHN, RN, NP, MFT is currently a Nurse consultant specialist for the Maternal Child Adolescent Health (MCAH) Branch of the Department of Health Services of California where she is responsible for the Regional Perinatal Programs of California (RPPC). She received her BS in Nursing from California State University (Chico) and her PHN in public health from UCLA. Ms. Shields completed her NP's in Adult Health at Harbor-UCLA and as well as in Women's Health at Educational Professional Associate. Throughout her work she has consistently tried to emphasize the importance of the family as a critical component to anything done to and for any identified patient. Awareness of the interdependence and importance of each member within the family unit is critical to the care provided. In the case of CMQCC, the mother is generally the hub of the family and her health and well-being is critical to all other family members. This makes it imperative that we consider how we can safeguard her health and well-being. Because the Maternal Quality Improvement Program is designed to help identify ways to better safeguard the health and well being of the mother it also is the basis of strengthening and supporting the entire family. In Ms. Shields' tenure at the MCAH she has been involved in many programs affecting mothers and their children. While Ms. Shields do not have direct affiliation with national or international groups, she works toward collaboration within the many State Programs that compliment the work done at MCAH.
