CMQCC & CPQCC Announces New Co-Directors & Private Investigators

The California Maternal (CMQCC) and Perinatal (CPQCC) Quality Care Collaboratives are thrilled to announce the appointment of new Co-Directors and Principal Investigators.

Please join us in welcoming Drs. Deirdre Lyell and Jochen Profit as they step into their new leadership roles. Drs. Lyell and Profit, respected leaders in maternal-fetal medicine and neonatology, respectively, have shown great commitment and dedication to improving perinatal care and reducing inequities in California. We are confident that Drs. Lyell and Profit, with input and guidance from our valuable staff and partners, have the experience, passion, and vision to help us navigate this transition to build on our successes.

Dr. Lyell is the Dunlevie Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Stanford and brings more than 25 years of clinical experience in maternal-fetal medicine and obstetrics and gynecology. She has conducted impactful, practice changing research in clinical obstetrics, racial and ethnic disparities in obstetrics, anemia, severe maternal morbidity, placenta accreta spectrum and prematurity prevention. She has led QI initiatives locally and at scale, working with community members, people with lived experience and providers to ensure that everyone receives equitable care. At Stanford, she serves as Director of Perinatal Epidemiology and Population Health in the Dunlevie Maternal-Fetal Medicine Center; Medical Director of Labor and Delivery; Associate Division Director of Maternal-Fetal Medicine; Medical Director or the Program in Placental Disorders; and project lead for the NIH-funded Center of Excellence award, Preventing Inequities in Hemorrhage-related Severe Maternal Morbidity. Nationally, Dr. Lyell is a founding board member of the Pan American Society for Placenta Accreta Spectrum, a board member of the Society for Maternal-Fetal Medicine Foundation, an examiner for the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology MFM specialty boards, and has served in a variety of roles for the National Institutes of Health (NIH).

Dr. Profit is the Wendy J. Tomlin-Hess Professor of Pediatrics at Stanford and has more than 20 years of experience in pediatrics and neonatal-perinatal medicine. He joined CPQCC in 2013 and has served as Chief Scientific Officer and, since 2018, as Chief Quality Officer. A recipient of the David Wirtschafter Award, he has overseen several local and statewide improvement efforts. At Stanford, he serves as Director, Perinatal Health Systems Research in the Division of Neonatal and Developmental Medicine. For the past 15 years Dr. Profit has received continuous funding for his research from federal, foundation, and intramural sources, including three current NIH R01s. His research has primarily focused on the optimization of care delivery to mothers and sick newborns and included health system design, care culture and provider well-being, health equity, and family centered care. Dr. Profit is a board member of the California Association of Neonatologists and at the national level has served in a variety of roles for the National Institutes of Health, the National Academies for Science, Engineering and Medicine, the Vermont Oxford Network, and the American Academy of Pediatrics. He is also incoming Co-chair of the Hot Topics in Neonatology Annual Meeting Program Committee.

“We are honored and eager to continue to build on the successes of CMQCC and CPQCC in improving quality of care and outcomes for all mothers, pregnant people, newborns, and families. In collaboration with our team, we look forward to harnessing the expertise of hospitals, providers, our diverse communities, partners, and funders as we expand California’s leadership in perinatal and early childhood care.”

- Drs. Lyell and Profit

CMQCC and CPQCC are among the most successful perinatal collaboratives in the United States and the world. Drs. Lyell and Profit, in collaboration with our team and the many partners in California and nationally, will continue to build on the transformational work of Drs. Jeffrey Gould and Elliott Main, both of whose vision and many years of stewardship have made these collaboratives what they are today. We are excited for their continued participation that has helped these collaboratives realize where we are today.

“I am so pleased that Deirdre and Jochen have been chosen to build upon CPQCC and CMQCC’s strong foundation and look forward to their continued development of innovative strategies and partnerships to further improve perinatal outcomes in California.”

- Dr. Jeff Gould

“Drs. Lyell and Profit are fantastic choices to lead our nationally renowned perinatal quality collaboratives to the next level of achievement for both data driven QI and equitable/respectful care. Their leadership will ensure that CMQCC/CPQCC will continue to inspire all of California and the nation.”

- Dr. Elliott Main

Congratulations, Drs. Lyell and Profit!
