CMQCC is recognizing hospitals across California for engagement, quality improvement, and sustainability efforts in maternity care

The California Maternal Quality Care Collaborative (CMQCC) is announcing its third annual CMQCC Quality and Engagement Awards. For the 2023 awards, CMQCC is recognizing a total of 121 hospitals and one hospital system with 167 awards for their accomplishments in Calendar Year 2022. Awardees are recognized for having the highest levels of engagement with CMQCC’s quality improvement tools and programs.

Each of the Quality and Engagement Award recipients are part of CMQCC’s community of 217 member hospitals, accounting for 99% of births in California. CMQCC member hospitals have priority access to all evidence-based best-practice tools, education, and clinical guidance. Among this set of tools is the Maternal Data Center (MDC) – a web application that provides near-real-time benchmarking data, quality metrics and performance reports for hospital personnel. The MDC links state birth certificate data with each hospital’s patient discharge data to generate a wide range of perinatal performance metrics and quality improvement insights.

Below is an overview of the three categories for this year’s CMQCC awards:

  • Early Implementers Awards, which recognize hospitals that implemented a new Maternal Data Center (MDC) measure or feature.
  • Quality and Sustainability Awards, which recognize hospitals’ quality and sustainability efforts in three distinct areas: QI Academy and Collaborative Hospitals, Maternal Safety Standards Implementation, and NTSV Cesarean Birth Rate (PC-02).
  • Superstar Awards, which recognize hospitals that exhibited high levels of engagement in the MDC (awarded by delivery volumes: Small, Medium, and Large).

To see a full list of 2023 award winners and detailed descriptions of each award, please visit the CMQCC Awards page, and stay tuned for an upcoming announcement on the criteria for the 2024 awards.

CMQCC launched the Quality and Engagement Awards program in 2021 to recognize California member hospitals for going above and beyond to provide high quality care to California’s mothers, birthing people, and their families. Currently, nearly all California birthing hospitals are active CMQCC members and are using the Maternal Data Center to track maternity care performance and identify perinatal quality improvement opportunities.
